Neuromodulation Focused on a Peripheral Nerve
Peripheral nerve stimulation, or PNS, uses a small lead placed near a targeted peripheral nerve to deliver mild electrical stimulation. The stimulation is intended to change how pain signals from that nerve are transmitted and experienced.
PNS systems are available in different forms. Some are used for a defined treatment period and then removed, while others are designed for longer-term therapy. The approach depends on the diagnosis, target nerve, treatment goals, and system selected.
Device selection and treatment duration are individualized. The discussion should include lead placement, use of the external or implanted components, activity precautions, programming, removal when applicable, and follow-up.
Identify a Specific Nerve Target
Evaluation identifies the affected nerve before stimulation is considered.
Why It May Be Considered
Persistent pain associated with an identifiable peripheral nerve
Symptoms that continue after appropriate initial treatment
Clinical findings that support a focused stimulation target
Realistic functional goals and ability to manage the device
What to Discuss With Your Specialist
Which nerve is being considered and why
Whether the proposed system is temporary or implanted
Previous treatments and the response to them
Lead care, activity limits, programming, and follow-up
