Creating More Space in the Lumbar Spinal Canal
MILD, or minimally invasive lumbar decompression, is an image-guided procedure for selected patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. It is intended to address narrowing associated with thickened ligament tissue that can reduce space for the nerves in the lower back.
Through a small access point, the physician uses specialized instruments to remove small portions of tissue contributing to the narrowing. No implant is left in the spine, and the procedure is different from open lumbar decompression surgery.
The procedure is not appropriate for every type of spinal stenosis or back pain. Treatment planning also considers other possible causes of symptoms, overall health, medications, and realistic mobility goals.
Confirm the Source of Walking-Related Symptoms
Symptoms and imaging must support MILD before treatment is considered.
Why It May Be Considered
Lumbar spinal stenosis affecting walking or standing tolerance
Symptoms consistent with neurogenic claudication
Imaging showing narrowing associated with thickened ligament tissue
Symptoms that continue after appropriate nonsurgical care
What to Discuss With Your Specialist
How standing and walking affect your symptoms
MRI findings and the structures causing the narrowing
Treatments already completed and their results
Preparation, recovery, risks, and expected activity afterward
